Heartwood House celebrates ISI inspection report finding “significant strength” in careers and transition support

Heartwood House, an independent therapeutic school in Harrow, is delighted to announce the results of its recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, held from October 8-10, 2024. The inspection report praises Heartwood House for meeting all required Independent School Standards, with particular commendation for its exemplary career guidance and student transition support—a recognised “significant strength” of the school.

Heartwood House’s career guidance program was highlighted by the inspectors as a pivotal element in the students’ educational experience, equipping them with essential skills and confidence to transition successfully into further education, employment, and apprenticeships. “The school’s very well planned and highly effective preparation of pupils for transition into life after Heartwood House through career guidance is a significant strength,” the report states. The inspectors noted that students, many of whom have faced considerable educational disruption, are now achieving strong outcomes, thanks to this tailored and impactful support.

Key findings from the inspection report include:

  • Outstanding Career Guidance and Transition Support: The ISI report applauded Heartwood House’s careers program, which prepares students for future success through practical skills training, exposure to real-world job experiences, and one-on-one guidance. Through individualised support, students are encouraged to explore career paths and develop aspirations that align with their interests and capabilities.
  • Dedicated Leadership and Governance: The school’s leadership team and trustees are commended for their commitment to a student-centred educational approach. This dedication ensures that Heartwood House’s ethos is embedded in every aspect of the school, from its highly personalised curriculum to its inclusive policies and practices.
  • High-Quality, Personalised Education: The report notes that Heartwood House’s curriculum is responsive to the diverse needs of its students, providing flexibility and specialist support to allow each student to achieve personal and academic success. The curriculum incorporates a range of subjects, enabling students to pursue interests from creative arts to vocational studies.
  • Commitment to Student Wellbeing: Heartwood House’s emphasis on personal, social, health, and economic education fosters a safe and supportive environment where students develop confidence and resilience. The report also recognised the effectiveness of the school’s safeguarding procedures, affirming that students feel secure both on and off campus.

Cathy Haysom, Executive Headteacher of Heartwood House, expressed her pride in the school’s achievements: “We are particularly proud of the recognition our career guidance and transition program has received. Our mission is to help each student gain the confidence and skills to pursue their aspirations. This report affirms the commitment of our staff and trustees to ensure that every young person at Heartwood House is empowered for success beyond our school.”

Geraldine Norris, Chair of Trustees added: “We were thrilled to receive such a positive Independent Schools Inspectorate report after a two-and-a-half-day inspection.  Whilst single word statements are no longer used, we were delighted to have been found compliant in all areas of school life and to have been recognised as having a ‘significant strength’ for our commitment to securing the best possible outcomes for our students. I pay tribute to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved with Heartwood House and am very proud of the role we play within Harrow and the surrounding boroughs.”

While Heartwood House will build on its strengths, the report also recommended enhancements in tracking academic progress to support student motivation. The school remains committed to continual improvement in all areas of its work.
